Privacy
Cúpla Score keeps as little about you as it can. This page explains what is stored, why, and how to delete it.
Who is responsible
Cúpla Score is a free, non-commercial project run by one person, who is responsible for the information described here. For any privacy question or request, email info@cuplascore.com.
What we store
- An automatic nickname, such as “Brave Otter 427”. The game picks it at random when you press Start playing, so we can tell players apart without knowing who you are. It is shown on your share page until you add your first name.
- Your first name, if you add it on the name screen after Start playing, so the game can greet you and show it on your score.
- Your email address, if you choose to give it, so your score is saved against it.
- Whether you ticked “Send me new levels now and then”. The box is unticked unless you tick it, and we only email you about new levels if you did.
- Your game progress: level results, stars, your Cúpla Score and title, which words are due for review, which facts you’ve seen, and your settings.
- Game statistics: how you play the game (see below).
We also count anonymous daily totals of game events (for example, how many levels were played today). These counters contain no personal data.
Game statistics
When you play, we record your play sessions and your active playing time. Time when the game is in the background or you aren’t touching it doesn’t count. We also record which levels you start, finish, fail or quit, your rounds and scores, and your device type (phone, tablet or desktop; not your browser or device details).
These statistics are linked to your random player key and your automatic nickname. They use no cookies. We use them only to see how the game is played and to make it better, for example to find levels that are too hard. That is our legitimate interest (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). They are never shared or sold, and they are deleted with the rest of your data: when you choose “Delete my data”, or after 24 months without playing.
Why we store it
To run the game you asked to play: keep your score, sync your progress, and show your share page. Your email is used only to save your score and, if you ticked the box, to tell you about new levels. Apart from the game statistics described above, we don’t analyse your data. We never profile you or sell your data, and we only share it with the two services that run the site (see below).
The legal basis for storing your nickname, name and game progress is that it is needed to provide the game you chose to play (GDPR Article 6(1)(b)). Saving your score with your email is also part of that service. Emails about new levels are sent only with your consent (Article 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time by emailing us.
Where it is stored
On our own server at Hetzner Online in Helsinki, Finland, inside the European Union. Hetzner only hosts the server and processes the data on our instructions.
The site is delivered through Cloudflare, which protects it against attacks and speeds it up. Like any network, Cloudflare handles your IP address to deliver the page to you. It does this on our behalf under the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
Cookies and tracking
Cúpla Score sets no cookies and uses no third-party trackers, ads or analytics services. Fonts are served from our own server. Only if Cloudflare suspects automated traffic may it set a short-lived security cookie, which is strictly necessary to protect the site.
Your browser’s local storage keeps your game progress and a random key that links this device to your score. That is strictly necessary for the game to work, so there is no cookie banner.
We don’t store your IP address: our server logs leave it out. To stop abuse, we keep a scrambled (salted and hashed) version of it for rate limiting, and delete it within 24 hours.
Your share page
When you share your score, the link opens a public page showing your first name (or your automatic nickname if you haven’t added one), score, title and stars. It never shows your email address. Deleting your data removes the page.
How long we keep it
Until you delete it, or until you have not played for 24 months. After 24 months without any activity, your nickname, name, email, score, progress, game statistics and share page are deleted automatically. Scrambled IP addresses used for rate limiting are deleted within 24 hours.
Delete your data
In the game, open Settings and choose “Delete my data”. This deletes your score, progress and game statistics on your device and on our server straight away. You can also email us and we’ll delete it for you.
Your rights
You can ask to see a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, receive it in a portable format, or object to how we use it. Email info@cuplascore.com and we’ll reply within one month. You can also complain to the Data Protection Commission in Ireland (dataprotection.ie) or the data protection authority where you live.
Children
Anyone can play without giving an email address. If you are under 16, please ask a parent or guardian before you save your score with an email.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we use your data, we’ll update this page and the date below.
